qualified with distinction from the University of Edinburgh in 1982 and received the Gold Medal award for the most distinguished graduate of the year. He moved to the island in1985 after spending two and a half years in mixed practice in Derbyshire. After a further four years in practice on the island he retuned to Edinburgh to undertake a PhD in Veterinary immunology. He was awarded his doctorate in 1993 by which time he had returned to the island becoming a partner in the practice in September of that year. He has a wide range of professional interests including small animal surgery and exotic and wildlife medicine. He is a member of the British Veterinary Association, the British Small Animal Veterinary Association, the British Veterinary Zoological Society, the Association of Avian Vets and the American Association of Zoo Vets. Along with his wife and family he keeps and has kept a wide variety of pets including dogs, cats, birds, tortoises, fish and horses as well as a small flock of pedigree sheep.
